BACKGROUND

Oaky North has been developed in stages, requiring approval at the end of each stage before capital was approved for further development. This staged approach has been extremely cost effective in establishing a new mine and has resulted in all equipment being rigorously appraised to ensure it is a cost effective investment.

DESCRIPTION

A surface antenna of 9km (29,000 ft) will provide coverage to the whole underground mine for the next 5 to 6 years of mining. Depth of the mine is 100 to 200 metres (330 to 660 ft). The transmitter is located in the main office building and is connected to the main computer via a standard twisted pair link.

JUSTIFICATION

Oaky North justified the system by the productivity and safety advantages offered by a true mine wide (every part of every roadway underground is in range) signaling system reliant on a surface antenna only.
